Co-operative Educational Program (Co-ops)
What is the Co-operative Educational Program?
Each student attending Cal Maritime will have the opportunity to have at least one sea-training experience on the Training Ship GOLDEN BEAR. The context of training will depend on the academic major. Students enrolled in the Business Administration, Global Studies and Maritime Affairs, Facilities Engineering Technology, or Mechanical Engineering Degree with the CPE-IT option, will also participate in one or two Co-ops after the first sea-training experience.
All cadets must participate in Co-Op as required for their major. Co-Ops last at least 60 days and provide a great opportunity to develop the skills that they have learned in the classroom, culminating in a relationship with a company that may lead to a job offer upon graduation. All Co-Op placements must be approved by the appropriate academic department. As this is an academic program, please look under the specific course for other details such as prerequisites.
The Co-op program is designed to give students an opportunity to work with a company or professional or governmental organization specializing in the field of the student's interest. The organizations are varied as are the co-op training programs for each academic major. Students will spend at least 60 days with the firm working at learning the ropes of the business in which they wish to enter. Students are required to complete and academic exercise that will be evaluated by the faculty as they will earn academic credit for the Co-op program. Examples of companies participating in the Co-op program include Agilent Technologies, IBM, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories, as well as numerous power and co-gen plants, and companies involved with the logistics of shipping.
