Marine Engineering
Technology (MET)
The Marine
Engineering Technology (MET)
program's focus is on the
technical planning and
installation, operation,
maintenance, and management of
marine engineering systems.
These include propulsion systems
using Diesel, Steam Turbine, and
Gas Turbine Engines and
auxiliary systems such as
Electrical Generation, Heating,
Ventilation, and Air
Conditioning, Refrigeration,
Water Distillation, Compressed
Air, and Waste Water Treatment.
During their course of study,
students complete a curriculum
accredited by the Technology
Commission of ABET and
participate in three 60-day
training cruises aboard the
Training Ship Golden Bear.
Those students who qualify may
do their second training cruise
aboard a commercial or
government vessel.
Students in the MET program must
complete all of the competencies
for the Standards for Training
and Certification of
Watchkeepers (STCW), as set down
by the International Maritime
Organization (IMO). In
addition, in their senior year,
they are required to take and
pass the Third Assistant
Engineers Exam administered by
the U.S. Coast Guard. If
they choose to do so, MET majors
may participate in U.S. Navy or
U.S. Coast Guard programs
leading to a reserve officer's
commission.
