Captain's Log

05/09/2004

After departing Dutch Harbor, the weather began to deteriorate.  The low that was moving to the north of the Training Ship was causing 40 kts of wind and 10 to 12 foot seas.  Through out the night, the ship was in moderate motion enough to keep some awake.  By morning, the wind and sea began to moderate, and the barometer began to rise.

The fair weather was just in time as the entire day was centered around the line at the iridium phone for students calling home for Mother's day.  From before eight in the morning until late evening, the ships one crew phone line has been in constant use.  At $2.00 per minute, someone is having a good day.

The engine room on the Golden Bear, like the bridge, is a 24 hour operation with a team of 6 persons keeping all of our machinery functioning .  The engine log is also a legal record of the vessels operation and will be discussed more in future log reports.
