Captain's Log
06/19 A/2004
Today we have
finally moved out of the influence of the Tropical Storm
moving through the Philippine Sea and the overcast has
cleared. This is important in order that the senior deck
cadets can finish their testing on celestial navigation. The
engineering program is getting down to the review period for
finals exams which are scheduled soon.
With the schedule
change, our speed required to Midway was high so we have been
making about 19 kts of speed. By tomorrow, the speed required
to make Midway will be down to a more reasonable level and we
should be able to start slowing down.
We have been in
contact with the rangers on Midway. They are arranging for
the ship to deliver supplies on our return voyage as well as
ice cream on the first visit for 2 children who are with their
families on the island.
The trade winds are
strong today, but are expected to moderate tomorrow. They do
help in keeping the temperature down, but make our painting
crews have a difficult time.
Tonight, we advance clocks
one hour to zone time (-12) and then retard clocks 24 hours to
get to zone time (+12). That will once again put the training
ship on the same date as our friends at home and only two
hours from Hawaii time.
