2009-2010 Awards

Financial Aid award letters are being mailed for the 2009-2010 year. Here are some pointers on completing your financial aid:

1. Scholarships and Grants will be disbursed close to September 8th, when classes begin. In order to have them disbursed, please register for all your classes and attend them. To award certain awards, the exact number of units must be used.
2. Stafford Loans: for new and continuing students, please complete a Stafford Loan Reply Sheet.  New students have the extra steps of completing Stafford Entrance Loan Counseling, Master Promissory Note (MPN) and choosing a lender. These steps can be completed from a URL on the Stafford Loan Reply Sheet.  After completing the Entrance Loan Counseling, Submit it and click on Lender Options (All lenders have exactly the same terms.), then choose a lender, then Apply, which takes you to the MPN. Please complete this and your loan should be ready for you when you get to CMA, provided you registered for classes.                                    
3. Parent PLUS Loans: for new and continuing students, you will need to apply for these loans by submitting an application to your lender. If you would like assistance with finding a lender, please login Apply for Parent PLUS Loan, Parent, then California, then California Maritime Academy. You can choose any of the lenders there, or, if you have had a previous loan, please use your previous lender.
4. Perkins Loans: Please complete a Perkins Loan Reply Sheet at Perkins Loan Reply Sheet. If this is your first Perkins Loan at Cal Maritime, please click on the URL on the Perkins Loan Reply Sheet and complete your Perkins Entrance Loan Counseling and MPN.
5. Stafford Loans, continued. If you already completed the Stafford Entrance Loan Counseling and have not completed your MPN, please Apply for Stafford Loan, Student, California, CMA, Apply.
6. When these steps are completed, please check your financial aid in Peoplesoft to make sure all awards are accepted. If they are, please make sure you have enrolled in all your classes.
7. All financial aid funds are applied to your Cal Maritime account. You may receive a refund check after all fees are deducted. (Uniforms and books should be paid to the bookstore, eFollett, before any refund checks will be generated.)

Please make sure you complete the process as soon as possible to avoid being dropped from classes.

Disbursements

Students receive disbursements of all grants and loans when the student is attending  classes at Cal Maritime. If the student is attending classes and has met with all other eligibility requirements and if Cal Maritime has received the funds from the source, the disbursements are noted in the students' account. Any checks resulting from all the fees being paid are sent to the student within ten days, except for monies remaining after fees have been paid by PLUS loans. In this case, the remaining funds are sent to the parent within ten days.
