Counseling and Psychological Services
The California Maritime Academy is concerned with the overall health and well-being of its students. Because of this, the Student Health and Wellness Center provides psychological and counseling services in addition to various medical services. These psychological services are supported by Student Health and Wellness Center fees and are provided at no additional cost to Cal Maritime students.
Personal problems and emotional difficulties can easily interfere with a student's personal life and academic success. Such problems can include depression, excessive anxiety, stress-related physical illnesses, sexual concerns, relationship problems and substance abuse. For example, studies have shown that depression is one of the most common problems a university student might encounter, and at the same time, it is well known that depression is one of the most treatable of all the various types of psychological problems.
Being a student at Cal Maritime can be both an exciting and a stressful time. Expectations for academic and social success can increase the pressure a student feels, and psychological counseling can help one cope more effectively with these demands and pressures. A licensed clinical psychologist is on the professional staff at the Student Health and Wellness Center and students are encouraged to utilize this confidential service. Dr. Carlton Purviance can be contacted for an appointment at (707) 552-6397 or (707) 654-1170 or by emailing him directly at: cpurviance@csum.edu.
Confidential psychological services are provided at the Student Health & Wellness Center, at Dr. Purviance's private office in downtown Vallejo, and aboard the Training Ship Golden Bear during cruise. Great care is taken to assure that these psychological services are provided in a confidential manner, and students should not hesitate to discuss any concerns they may have regarding confidentiality with Dr. Purviance.
