Accomplished Projects 2007-08
Information Technology Department
Network outages on campus during 2007-08 resulted from short circuits in the Classroom Building and power failures. Multiple small UPS systems were deployed in the Data Center but were over utilized (in many cases, several servers were connected to a UPS).
Mitigation required improved wiring and a large uninterruptible power supply (UPS). A 208V 20kW UPS w/ Bypass and Distribution was acquired from APC and installed by Sacramento Power to sustain servers, routers, core switches, etc. for up to 30 minutes during a power outage. It also allows time for the backup generator to be brought online when PG&E power is lost without network downtime. The UPS protects the University’s investment in information technology while providing the entire campus community with a more stable network environment.
Background: As a result of a power outage, a fiber blade supporting the Golden Bear, the Boat House, SPEL, the front gate, etc. was lost. It required an additional hour beyond the power outage time to bring these locations back up on the network. The replacement cost for a blade is $12,000… we were fortunate to have a spare on hand but we then had none.
