Cal Maritime Hosts Free Cash For College Workshop
Local high school seniors and parents encouraged to
attend
VALLEJO, Calif., January 24, 2005
— The California Maritime Academy (Cal Maritime), a campus of The
California State University, is hosting a free Cash for College
workshop on its campus on Saturday, February 12, 2005. The workshop
is presented by the SUCCESS Consortium, which is a project of the
California Student Opportunity and Access Program and is
administered by the California Student Aid Commission.
Geared for local high school seniors
and their parents, the Cash for College workshop provides
students and their families the opportunity to receive free,
professional help to fill out the Free Application for Federal
Student Aid (FAFSA), which must be completed by March 2, 2005. The
FAFSA must be completed to receive any kind of financial aid for
college, such as grants, loans, work-study jobs, or scholarships.
While the workshop is being held on
the Cal Maritime campus, it is designed for high school seniors
planning to request financial aid for any college campus.
The workshop is being co-sponsored by the Solano, Yolo, and Napa
County Offices of Education; Migrant Education; Senator Mike
Machado; Senator Wesley Chesbro; Assembly Member Noreen Evans; and
Assembly Member Lois Wolk.
“In California, there is free money
available for college called a ‘Cal-Grant’ that can help or, in some
cases, completely pay a two- or four-year college, university, or
vocational school,” said Ken Walsh, director of financial aid at Cal
Maritime. “Cal Maritime is pleased to be serving as host for the
Vallejo Cash for College workshop to help local high school
seniors apply for financial assistance that will help them achieve
their educational goals.”
Walsh added that as a California
resident, students are entitled to a Cal-Grant if they have an
eligible GPA and income level. To apply for Cal-Grants, the FAFSA
and GPA verification form must be completed.
The SUCCESS Cash for College
Workshop will be conducted by financial aid professionals from
California colleges and universities. Attendees will receive
line-by-line help to complete the forms either by hand or online,
whichever method is preferred. Tax professionals will also be
present to help with the tax information necessary to complete the
FAFSA.
The goal for the workshop is for
attendees to leave with their FAFSA completed or near completion.
Therefore, there are some items students will need to bring with
them to the workshop. For more information on the workshop and what
students should bring with them, contact the SUCCESS Consortium at
707-693-2004 or Success@solano.edu.
