William B. Eisenhardt
President
A career educator, Dr. William
Eisenhardt is the president of The
California Maritime Academy, one of the
23 campuses in the California State
University system. Eisenhardt, who
began his leadership role at Cal
Maritime in July 2001, is a man with a
mission and a strong vision for Cal
Maritime—to provide each student with a
quality education combining intellectual
learning, applied technology, leadership
development, and global awareness. His
leadership and drive have energized the
campus and the surrounding community.
Previously, Dr. Eisenhardt was provost
of Maine Maritime Academy, where he was
originally appointed in 1984 as a
professor of economics and management
specializing in quantitative analysis at
the undergraduate and graduate level.
One of his initial tasks at Maine
Maritime Academy was instituting a
leadership and management-training
program for the regiment of midshipmen.
In 1986, the former Governor Kenneth
Curtis appointed him as the vice
president of student affairs, and in
1994 he was appointed to vice president
of academic affairs as well and his
title was changed to provost.
Dr. Eisenhardt started his career in
higher education in 1975 when he joined
Husson College in Bangor, Maine as dean
of student life and taught in both the
undergraduate and graduate business
program. He later returned to academic
affairs at St. Joseph’s College in North
Windham, Maine, as associate dean of the
external degree and continuing education
program before coming to Maine Maritime
Academy in 1984. While at St. Joseph’s
College, he pioneered the
computerization of academic records at
the institution and was also responsible
for the faculty application of distance
learning techniques.
After relocating to Vallejo from Maine,
Dr. Eisenhardt became involved in
Northern California community
organizations, as well as continuing his
lifelong dedication to maritime
education issues. He currently serves as
a board member of the Solano County
Economic Development Corporation and is
chairman of the Council of State
Maritime Academies & Colleges
Consortium. Dr. Eisenhardt was active
in the founding of the International
Association of Maritime Universities, an
association for which he currently
serves as the chair of the editorial
board.
Dr. Eisenhardt’s professional
affiliations include the National
Association of Student Personnel
Administrators, American Association of
University Professors, and the American
Association of Higher Education, within
which he has held numerous offices.
Dr. Eisenhardt is a native of Baltimore,
MD and a 1966 graduate of the United
States Naval Academy, where he earned
academic stars in engineering and
competed on national championship
lacrosse teams. During the Vietnam War,
he served as a naval flight officer,
earning the Air Medal and Navy
Commendation Medal among other personal
and unit citations. After four
additional years of deploying throughout
the world, he resigned from active duty
and attended Duke University, where he
earned his graduate degrees and taught
as a visiting professor. Upon leaving
Maine Maritime Academy, the Board of
Trustees awarded him the Doctor of
Science, Honoris Causa, in recognition
of his work in maritime education
nationally and internationally.
Dr. Eisenhardt lives in Vallejo, CA with
his wife Kathryn.
