Annual Disclosure

The Mission of the California Maritime Academy is to provide each student with a quality college education combining intellectual learning applied technology, leadership development and global awareness. The campus community consists of approximately 850 students, faculty and staff, plus many visitors to Cal Maritime's continued education programs and special events. The majority of our students reside in our residence halls on campus.

The campus is located in Vallejo on the north shore of the Carquinez Strait at the northeastern extreme of the San Pablo Bay. Nestled among the hills adjacent to the beautiful waters of the Bay, the Academy is approximately 30 miles northeast of San Francisco. The campus is bordered on the northwest side by a quiet residential neighborhood of stately homes known as Crystal Pointe. Although Cal Maritime has been fortunate in experiencing few serious crimes, such incidents could occur, and all crime is serious to the victim. We are committed to working with all members of the community to provide a safe and secure environment.

Crime Reporting Policy, Procedures and Responses

The California Maritime Academy prepares this report in order to comply with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Crime Statistics Act. This report is prepared in cooperation with the Vallejo Police Department, Housing and Student Services, Marine Programs, and Student Conduct. We update Web site to reflect the last 3 years crime statistics. In February of each year, the Director of Public Safety contacts campus officials by email for information pertinent to the Clery Act. The DPS asks all campus authorities report any instances of crimes of which they are aware, but are not reported to the Public Safety Office via written reports. Any information received in response is included in the Annual Clery Act Report.
Offices contacted include:

The Office of the President

The Vice President Marine Programs

The Vice President of Student Affairs

The Vice President of Administration and Finance

The Office of Academic Affairs

The Office of Human Resources

The Director of Student Life
Student Counseling Services*

Student Health Services

Director of Athletics

Directors of Residential Life (Old and New Residence Halls

*A professional counselor acting within the function of his or her license or certification is not required by the Clery Act to report crime statistics for inclusion in this report.

Hard copies of the report may also be obtained from the Public Safety Department or printed from the Web site via Adobe Acrobat Reader (include link). Prospective employees and students are provided the same information at the time they obtain an application for employment or admission. Any person may have access to the report.

In September of each year, we e-mail a notice to all enrolled students, faculty, and staff that provides the Web site address to access this report. Additionally, the notice will state that copies of the entire report are available upon request at the Public Safety Department, 200 Maritime Academy Drive, Vallejo, CA 94590, or by calling (707) 654-1176.

Remote Campuses

The campus does not recognize any off campus fraternity or sorority houses; likewise, student organization recognition does not extend beyond the Academy.

The Cal Maritime Public Safety Department does not provide security or have investigative jurisdiction at off campus areas. The campus does not own or operate any remote sites. However, occasional classes are conducted at an off campus location because of the nature of the training (i.e., marine firefighting at Treasure Island, CA). All emergencies and crimes are reported to local law enforcement agencies by dialing 9-1-1 within those municipalities. A campus instructor/administrator at these classes will notify The Public Safety Department of any crimes that occur during an off campus class.

Training Ship Golden Bear

A significant part of the educational experience at Cal Maritime takes place on the Training Ship Golden Bear, both on and off campus during the annual training cruise. The Golden Bear visits large commercial ports as well as remote ports globally. The Public Safety Department responds to incidents aboard the ship when it is in port at Cal Maritime, but does not provide any security for the training ship while it is on annual cruise. All emergencies and crimes should be reported to the ship’s master, who ensures subsequent reporting to Public Safety for inclusion in this report.

Confidential Reporting Procedures

If you are the victim of a crime and do not want to pursue action within the campus disciplinary or criminal justice system, we encourage you make a confidential report. The Director of Public Safety or a designee within the department may file an incident report without revealing your identity. The purpose of a confidential report is to comply with your request for confidentiality, while initiating steps to maintain the public and your safety. This information is important for crime prevention, analysis, and alerting the campus to potential danger. Confidential reports will be counted and disclosed in the annual crime statistics for the institution.

Professional Counselors

The Student Health and Counseling Center provides clinical medical care and psychological counseling services to Cal Maritime students. Medical personnel and counselors are encouraged to inform victims to report crimes on a voluntary and confidential basis. Counselors do not disclose information to public safety without authorization from the victim.

Timely Warning Policy

On occasion you will see “Timely Warning Notices” describing recent crime trends or dangerous incidents. It is our policy to post these notices on the kiosks and bulletins located in areas frequented by the campus community to provide our community with information about the incidents and crime prevention recommendations. Once all relative information is received, these notices will typically be posted within 24 hours.

As members of the campus community we share the responsibility of maintaining a safe environment. Your safety at Cal Maritime is the number one concern of the Public Safety Department.
