Academic and Administrative Buildings

Academic and administrative buildings generally are secured no later than 11:00 pm, (except during special events or extended classes) with the exception of the student center, which is secured at midnight. Anyone working late or on weekends may contact the on duty Community Support Specialist (CSS). Access to these buildings after normal operating hours is restricted to persons presenting written authorization from the appropriate department head, or through prior arrangements with the appropriate administrator and the Public Safety Department. Holiday access scheduling is treated as weekend access.

Residence Halls

Trained Resident Assistant (RA) staff live in the campus residence halls. In the Upper Residence Hall, a three-story brick facility, there is one RA for each wing for a total of 5 RA’s. In the Lower Residence Hall there are 5 RA’s (3 assigned to complex A, 1 assigned to complex B and 2 assigned to complex C).

Access Policies for Residence Halls

Cal Maritime offers two traditional residence halls, which provide on-campus housing for approximately 400 students. Access to student dorms is limited to residents, escorted guests and staff. In the Upper Residence Hall, entry is monitored on a 12-hour basis (after normal working hours) via a “card key” system on the front door. Community Service Specialists secure The Upper Residence Hall at 10 p.m.
seven days a week. Students are reminded and encouraged to close doors that are propped open. They are told to contact Public Safety if they see suspicious persons in the hall and to make locking their room door a habit. Entry to the Lower Residence Hall is controlled by keyed access to individual rooms. There are no staffed desks at any residence hall entrances.
• Crime prevention tips and notices are posted in the residence halls reminding students of security and loss prevention procedures.
• Community Service Officers and Resident Assistants frequently patrol the residence halls throughout the night.

Maintenance of Campus Facilities

Facilities and landscaping are maintained in a manner that minimizes hazardous conditions. The officers survey the campus and identify areas that require trimming of shrubs in areas that present personal safety deficiencies and to prevent or limit the opportunity for crime. The street lighting system campus wide has been drastically upgraded installing additional lights in A, G and the E/F Parking Lots.

Community Support Specialists regularly conduct lighting surveys and report lighting deficiencies and other unsafe physical conditions to Facilities Management. We have installed “no cost phones” at the front door of the Upper Residence Hall, in each housing section of the Lower Residence Hall, and in the E/F Parking Lot. Community Support Specialists regularly test the emergency phones located in the E/F Parking Lot and at the residence halls, and submit requests for repair as necessary. Our officers take action to mitigate hazardous conditions when it is within their capabilities.

All members of the campus community are encouraged to report unsafe conditions to Facilities Management or Public Safety. Periodic crime prevention surveys are conducted when a crime trend occurs, or upon the physical change to a building or office space, and when requested by an administrator. The campus uses keyed locks, (Best Lock System) to secure all office and administrative buildings. Access to the Computer Lab/ Classroom and the Information Management Office, located in the Classroom Building, is controlled with a “swipe” card system.
