The Leadership Gold Medal Award Program – Coaching Program

The Coaching Program is one of three components of the Leadership Gold Medal Award program.  The Coaching program is designed to link cadets with experienced professionals to enhance their career and personal development through the completion of the Leadership Gold Medal Award Program.  Participation in this program will be a contributing factor affecting a cadet’s success, satisfaction and retention at Cal Maritime.  Additionally, the Coaching Program will provide the opportunity for coaches to share experiences with and aid the personal and professional growth of the cadet.

By participating in the Coaching Program, cadets should expect a high degree of personal and professional success and a feeling of inclusion in the organization.  The cadets will also have someone to talk with who can provide a listening ear and a different perspective and be provided with valuable direction and clarification.  Additionally, cadets will be provided with assistance in figuring out what they need to do to fill in the gaps between where they are now and where they want to be in the future.

The cadet’s responsibilities are:

  • willingness to learn;

  • ability to accept constructive feedback;

  • willingness to “stretch” to try new things and take risks; and

  • ability to identify short-term and long-range goals and accept that those goals may change.

The coaches are a select, volunteer group of faculty and staff members.  The coach’s responsibilities are:

  • desire to share what they have learned during their careers;

  • willingness to spend time to develop a good working relationship that is trusting and honest;

  • enhancement of skills and intellectual development of the cadets;

  • passes along organizational information;

  • provides candid feedback;

  • points out opportunities to develop and demonstrate capabilities;

  • advises on how to deal with real or perceived roadblocks;

  • serves as a sounding board;

  • encourages and motivates the cadet;

  • builds the cadet’s self-confidence and sense of self;

  • assists with the Leadership Gold Medal Award Program;

  • uses skills of listening counseling, career advising, and goal setting; and

  • acts as a “referral agent” on issues that require more information than you have

The responsibilities of the partnership between the cadet and the coach are:

  • Plan to commit to a one-year partnership to develop trust and rapport;

  • Plan to discuss a “no-fault” termination clause;

  • Plan to have a six-month checkup point to evaluate how it’s working out;

  • Plan once-a-month check-in or more often if needed;

  • Partners agree to confidentiality;

  • Identify short-term, medium and long range goals and develop an action plan;

  • Fill in the gaps between present state and future state;

  • Use the coach’s experiences, ideas, and guidance to expand the options for the cadet;

  • Explore the coach’s referral resources to expand the cadet’s opportunities;

  • Work to build the cadet’s self esteem and confidence and encourage them to stretch;

  • Regularly review progress in the Leadership Gold Medal Award Program; and

  • Semi-annually review the cadet’s leadership portfolio.
