Student Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI®)

The Student LPI® assessment is based on The Leadership Challenge by James Kouzes and Barry Posner and is designed specifically for college students to measure their leadership development.  There are five practices of exemplary leadership that make up their leadership model.  They are:

  • Challenge the Process
  • Inspiring a Shared Vision
  • Enabling Others to Act
  • Modeling the Way
  • Encouraging the Heart

Reliability and validity studies from the Student LPI® consistently show the same result:  The more frequently you engage in the behaviors included in the five practices, the more likely you will be seen as an effective leader.  The Student LPI® enables many different kinds of leaders the opportunity to consider the leadership skills they already possess as well as explore the skills they want to develop.

Participation in the Student LPI® is part of a student’s co-curricular programming for professional development training (one of the six pillars of our leadership development program) where the following learning outcomes are realized by utilizing three leadership learning opportunities – leadership training, leadership development, and leadership engagement.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Identify the five practices of Exemplary Leadership
  • Receive valid and reliable feedback about your current use of these practices
  • Discover how “others” perceive your leadership behaviors
  • Identify your leadership strengths and opportunities for improvement
  • Find specific suggestions on how to improve in each of the five leadership practices
  • Make action plans for continuing your leadership development

Eligibility:  The Student LPI® is given to all freshmen during Orientation and is then expanded upon during their first Training Ship Golden Bear Cruise or through participation in the Gold Medal Leadership Program.
