THE HISTORY OF SUMMERTIME AT THE MARITIME

What began as a dream to introduce Cal Maritime has grown into a community event. The first year, 2003, the campus underwrote the 3-concert series. That trial balloon slowly gained altitude with an average of 200 folks at each concert. We persisted; a fourth concert was added; sponsorship support was solicited; Summertime gains momentum. The summer of 2007 we celebrated our fifth season with over twenty-four hundred music enthusiasts. Our upcoming 2008 season promises to break audience records with the addition of a fifth concert.

Favorite artists including Roy Rogers, Norton Buffalo and Tommy Castro attract audiences from Vallejo, as well as Solano, Napa and Contra Costa counties. Vallejo bands are featured openers and last October both acts were local – Raymond Victor Band and Urban Bushmen.

The setting is beyond compare – an expansive lawn on the waterfront with views of the Carquinez Straits, boats sailing on the bay, palm trees swaying in the breeze and families gathered for a musical evening. Audiences gather to hear the music and enjoy concessions that feature grilled food, beer and wine, sumptuous desserts, and coffee.

Our artistic mission is to provide the greater Vallejo community quality live musical entertainment that enhances the cultural and social life in a family-friendly atmosphere, and introduces Cal Maritime. Families do attend the concerts; over these first five years, children have literally grown up listening to music at Cal Maritime.

While the series remains free-to-the-public, Cal Maritime is suggesting a $10 per person donation to help underwrite program costs of presenting the concerts. Organizers hope that concert-goers will rally around the series and the Vallejo community to help preserve it—a valuable cultural asset—for years to come.

Cal Maritime is much more than the concert series. A specialized campus of the California State University system, we have a record 865 enrolled students pursing bachelors degrees in Maritime Transportation, Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering Technology, Facilities Engineering Technology, Global Studies & Maritime Affairs, and Business Administration.
