Ways to Give Outright

  • Gifts of Cash – Donating cash is the simplest and most direct way to give to Cal Maritime, and the contributions may be deductible for individuals who itemize on their federal income tax return. Many alumni and friends participate in Cal Maritime’s Annual Fund with gifts of cash. These benefactors enjoy seeing the immediate results of their generosity. Gifts can be sent to The California Maritime Academy Foundation at 200 Maritime Academy Dr., Vallejo, CA 94590.

  • Gifts of Stock – Donors normally receive a deduction for the value of their stock and may avoid capital-gains taxes. For more information please contact Thomas Dunworth, executive director of The California Maritime Foundation, at (707) 654-1037 or (415) 515-5438 (cell).

  • Planned Giving/Bequests– You may wish to retain an interest in your gift during your lifetime, such as the right to receive income from it, or prefer to make a donation as part of your estate. Under certain circumstances, your gift may entitle you to tax benefits. Please contact Thomas Dunworth (707) 654-1037 to discuss the benefits.

  • Gifts of Real Estate – Real Estate can make an excellent gift. Please call Thomas Dunworth at (707) 654-1037 to discuss how this might fit into your plans.

  • Gifts of Needed Equipment – A gift of needed equipment is a tangible item or product, which once donated can either be used by the university or sold to an outside party (where proceeds are then applied to philanthropic programs). Unlike gifts of cash and securities, such gifts allow a donor to receive the benefit or charitable contribution without drawing on cash flow and cash reserves. They also provide the university substantial value.

  • Gift of Vessels That Can be Used in the Vessel Donation Program – The Marine Development Committee will evaluate each boat’s utility to the academy’s program. Donated yachts may be sold by CMAF to raise money for the school for scholarships and other significant educational opportunities. For more information please contact Thomas C. Dunworth at (707) 654-1037.

        Giving Programs

  • Annual Fund – The Annual Fund is an ongoing fundraising effort aimed at securing continued support for Cal Maritime. We call it the Annual Fund because it began as a yearly fundraising campaign.

  • Corporate Gift Matching – As a benefit to its employees, many companies “match” charitable donations to certain types of organizations, such as higher education.

  • President’s Circle – The President’s Circle was formed in the spring of 2000 to help provide a continued source of unrestricted support for Cal Maritime as it faces its day-to-day needs. Members of the President’s Circle are alumni, friends, and business and community leaders who form a circle of support for the university. Annual memberships for corporations and individuals are available at the following levels: Corporate Circle, $10,000; Golden Bear Circle, $5,000; California State Circle, $2,500; and Maritime Circle, $1,000.

  • Scholarships – Many students struggle with finances to achieve college degrees. As a result, many of our students must work while attending the academy. Data shows that students who receive scholarship support are much more likely to complete their college careers because of the reduced stress of financial burdens and time spent away from campus to work. Research has indicated that students who receive merit-based scholarships are more likely to persist and reach their educational goals. Merit-based assistance supports and encourages academic excellence.  For more information please review our Scholarship Donor Guide.

  • Special Projects – Special projects are gift opportunities jointly designated by the donor and The California Maritime Academy.
