Business Administration / International Business & Logistics
The Major
In an ever changing global economy with global supply chains, global market opportunities and global customers, individuals managing such activities must have a dynamic global perspective.
The International Business and Logistics major at California Maritime Academy is an interdisciplinary degree that provides opportunities for students to gain essential skills in various aspects of international business, logistics, and supply chain management.
California Maritime Academy is the only institution on the West Coast offering a unique undergraduate major in this crucial aspect of economic life: international trade and the efficient, effective movement and storage of goods and services within an international setting.
International business and logistics students are multi-faceted “ critical thinkers;” cross-functional, cross-cultural, technologically savvy, groomed with important international business skill sets, but also taught how to cope with change and continually learn throughout their careers.
The abundant opportunities available to students from increasing international trade emphasize the continuing need for professionally trained individuals who can work in diverse areas of global transport management, outbound and inbound operations management, inventory planning, sales and order management, demand forecasting, customer service, and information management functions

Practical Experience and Professional Development
All IBL students at Cal Maritime pursue a co-operative work experience typically during the summer between their junior and senior year. Supervised by the IBL department faculty, this experience provides a practical and professional understanding of the global business and logistics industry. Co-ops have been arranged with American President Lines, Hanjin Line, Maersk Line, Matson Navigation, Fireman's Fund Insurance Company, Navis LLC, Chubb Group LLC, and Crowley Maritime Corporation among others.
In addition to internship experience, all IBL students are strongly encouraged to take an active membership in professional organizations such as the Sigma Beta Delta international honor society for business, management and administration; the Intermodal Association of North America; the Warehouse Education Research Council (WERC); the American Society for Transport and Logistics (ASTL); and Delta Nu Alpha (DNA), an internationalorganization of professional men and women in all areas and at all levels of transportation and logistics.
IBL Career Success
Skilled and talented graduates with training in international business logistics are highly sought after by many successful organizations, as demonstrated by placement rates that exceed 95%. Global maritime firms routinely focus their recruiting efforts on Cal Maritime’s students to fill responsible positions in a variety of global business and logistics positions.
A career in international business & logistics requires an individual to be exposed to many more areas of global business than more traditional functional positions. This improved insight into company operations accelerates an individual’s preparedness for greater responsibilities and often results in earlier attainment of more senior managerial positions.
Many graduates may find initial employment as managers, supervisors, account executives, consultants, analysts, planners and buyers. The interfunctional nature of international business and logistics often leads to positions that are highly visible within the organization and that are characterized by shorter career paths to upper management as compared to other functional areas.
