With 14 voyages under his
belt as captain of the TSGB, John Keever understands well the many
pieces of the puzzle that contribute to a successful cruise. After
department heads from food services, medical, engineering, and
education have reported in on the status and readiness of their
particular cruise component, the required cruise duties are then integrated
into the operating rotation of the cadets.
Once the ports of call have been determined (usually around the
Pacific Rim, which can include South America, the South Pacific .
and the Far East), it is the captain's job to make arrangements for
diplomatic clearance and to line up local officials and agents
providing for such necessities as docks, pilots, and tugs. A
standard cruise includes 47 days underway and 12 to 14 days in port
