April 22, 2002
From Captain Keever:
The ship got underway Sunday, April 21st, from Vallejo on a beautiful day and on schedule at 1600 hours. Everyone stayed on deck to watch the ship pass under the Golden Gate Bridge.
A large group of well wishers were on the bridge biding bon voyage as we passed underneath.
The sea outside the bay was calm, and the wind was light. At about 1900, the ship disembarked the pilot and turned south along the coast of California. By 2200, the ship was very quiet.
Monday morning arrived with continued good weather and the beginning of the first routine day at sea. Breakfast was lightly attended, as many decided to sleep in. Classes started at 0800,
as did daywork and practical training. Watch on the bridge and in the engine room had been going on since sailing.
At approximately noon, the ship reached Point Arguello just north of Santa Barbara and turned southwest on a course for Nuka Hiva in French Polynesia. As of noon, we had traveled 220
miles, with 2840 miles to go to land, and almost 12,000 miles until the end of the voyage.
Everyone on board appears healthy and happy, and morale is high.
