Day 5

Daily  Routine:

Today, the  engineering student in charge of fuel transfer and control spent the morning  calculating the amount of fuel used during the last 24-hour period.  At 12  noon today, we had 1,027,702 gal. of fuel oil on the ship.  Yesterday at  noon, we had 1,033,561 gal. on board.  During the past 24 hours, we used  5859 gal. of fuel oil.  On the ship we measure the fuel oil in barrels, (bbls).   42 gals. in a barrel.  Thus we used 140 bbls of fuel.  During that 24-hour  period, the ship traveled 271 nautical miles. (a nautical mile is a little  longer than a statute mile.)  By dividing the miles by the barrels of fuel  use, we can calculate the number of  bbls. Or gallon per mile the ship  used.  We get 0.51 bbl/mile or about 22 gallon/mile.  We watch our  consumption very carefully in order that we are always sure that we will  have enough fuel to finish the voyage.

 Observations:

Last night we had a very spectacular sunset and view of the 5 planets in  line in the western sky.
