Day 1

Daily  Log:

Welcome  to Cruise 2002-2.  Honolulu was a very busy place on Weds. Thursday and  Friday.  After boarding the plane in San Francisco, at 12 noon California  time, the cadets arrived at the ship about 3:30,  Hawaii time or 6:30,California time.  At that point, the real work begain.  First was moving on and getting  all the gear stowed into each students room.  Then, clean the ship from the  day of move out, as 290 student had just left at noon and headed back to San  Francisco.  By 7 PM Honolulu time, the liberty bell rang and those not on duty got a few hours  ashore in Honolulu.

An  early night was ordered by the Chief Mate and Chief Engineer as much work  waited for the next two days.  Early Thursday, the trucks stared arriving  and the loading of supplies and equipment started.  This went on all day  until just after dinner.  Lifejackets were issues, emergency stations posted  and the ship organized and perpared for sea.  Another few hours ashore  Thursday night got everyone in the right mood for more work on Friday.

Friday  stared with the arrival of the fresh vegtables and Milk and of course the  ice cream.  Loading was finished by Noon and the hatchs secured.  At 1300,  (1 PM) the engine room was fully manned and the deck crew went forward and  aft in preparation for getting underway for Suva Fiji.  At 1330, the tug and  Pilot arrived and the lines were sing;ed up.

The  last line was cast off at 1358 and the ship was underway with the Royal  Hawaian Band playing Aloha Ow ??????

As  we left Honolulu  harbor, The Coast Guard Harbor patrol was there to bid us farwell.

Outside  the harbor, a Navy exercise gave the watch a good deal of navigation work as  many navy ships were taking part in exercises.  Here we had to maneuver  around a Helo Carrier as it was launching and recovering aircraft.

By  Sat. the routine was set in and deck, engineering and business classes were  well undreway.  By Sunday, the weather had blown up a little but was all  behind us pushing us toward Suva.
