Cruise Training

Today, the deck cadets have been flushing the ships fire system. This is necessary because the ship uses sea water for the fire main system and it has sediment in it.  The fire system is used very little so water just sits in the system, particularly in the lower part of the ship.

Over many years, the sediment in the sea water, continues to settle out of the water and to the bottom of the fire system.  If you wait too long to flush the system, the pipes in the lower part of the system get filled with sediment and are completely clogged.  This can be extremely dangerous should a fire occur in the lower part of the ship, like the lower engine room.
