Hands-on Training

The Engineering Technology Department offers degree programs in Marine Engineering Technology (MET) and Facilities Engineering Technology (FET).

Both programs are based on a three-phase approach:  academic, technical and leadership.

The academic phase provides the foundations of math, science, and technical sciences appropriate to degrees in Engineering Technology.

The technical phase provides the "hands-on" experience necessary to understand and gain competence in the practical aspects of a wide variety of mechanical and energy systems.  Also, practical training is obtained with steam and diesel power plant simulators, cruises aboard Cal Maritime's training ship, T.S. GOLDEN BEAR, and with cooperative educational experience at companies such as General Electric, Pacific Gas and Electric, Lawrence Livermore National Lab, and Genentech.

Leadership skills are gained through student's experiences on the training ship, T.S. GOLDEN BEAR, and by participation in a variety of student-lead activities.

MET and FET graduates are sought by industry and are found in a variety of endeavors ranging from sea-going positions to shore-side activities and to more traditional technology positions.
