Preparation for Admission

High School Student Admission Requirements

  • Qualifying CSU Eligibility Index score

  • A “C” grade or better in each of the required college prep courses

  • Minimum 2.0 overall GPA (Grades earned in the 9th grade are not factored into the GPA calculation, but do count as fulfilling the college prep coursework requirements.)

Required College Prep Coursework (CSU/UC a-g list)

4 years High School English
3 years* Math—Elementary Algebra, Geometry, and Intermediate Algebra
1 year U.S. History
1 year Social Science (e.g. American Government, World History)
2 years Science with lab—one Biological Science and one Physical Science
2 years Foreign Language (must be in the same language)
1 year Visual or Performing Arts
1 year College Preparatory Electives (extra courses taken in any of the above categories, plus electives designated by the school)

*All Mechanical Engineering Applicants must take a fourth year of mathematics and have a minimum score of 550 SAT Math or 23 ACT Math.

Calculating CSU Eligibility Index

Multiply the High School GPA by 800, and then add your SAT combined score. ACT students multiply GPA by 200, then add ten times your ACT composite score.

Your GPA x 800 = _______ + SAT score = Your Index
Your GPA x 200 = _______ + (ACT composite x 10) = Your Index

California Residents

  • Minimum Eligibility Index = 2900 SAT-1 (694 with ACT)

  • Applicants with a 3.0 GPA or higher can be admitted with any SAT score

Non-residents

  • Students in WICHE states (Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming) must meet the CA resident eligibility index of 2900 SAT-1 (or 694 ACT index)

  • All other non-residents must have an eligibility index score of at least 3502 (SAT-1) or 842 (ACT)
