Information for International Applicants

International students must apply by by the published deadlines prior to the fall semester they plan to enroll. International students are not eligible for U.S. Coast Guard licenses without U.S. citizenship; however, they will receive a letter of completion for presentation to their international licensing organization.

Beyond Cal Maritime requirements for high school students, international students must submit a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score. Cal Maritime requires either an 80 Internet-based test, 213 computer-based test, or a 550 for paper based test. The TOEFL is required of all applicants with fewer than three years of full-time study (70 semester units or 105 quarter units) where English was the primary language of instruction. The SAT-I or ACT math and verbal/English test scores may be substituted for the TOEFL using the CSU eligibility index for non-residents. Academic records from foreign institutions must be on file by June 1 and if not in English, must be accompanied by certified English translations.

International students must demonstrate the ability to pay all educational expenses including books, room and board, or approximately $128,000 USD ($32,000 USD per year for four years). Here is the Affidavit of Financial Support required as part of each international student admission application. This must be done with a certified document either from a governmental agency or organization or from a financial institution handling the individual account of person(s) assuming responsibility for payment. FINANCIAL AID IS NOT AVAILABLE FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS. International students are assessed fees at the non-California resident rate.

As a condition of receiving an I-20 or IAP-66 form, all F-1 and J-1 visa applicants must agree to obtain and maintain Cal Maritime-affiliated health insurance as a condition of registration and continued enrollment in The California Maritime Academy. Such insurance must be in amounts as specified by the United States Information Agency (USIA) and NAFSA: Association of International Educators. The campus president or designee shall determine which insurance policies meet these criteria. Further information may be obtained by writing the Admission Office.
