Donna Nincic is Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Global and Maritime Studies.  She received her doctorate in Political Science/International Relations from New York University, and has held previous positions at the University of California, Davis; the Hoover Institution; and the US Department of Defense.  Her research focuses on maritime security in general, and maritime piracy and terrorism in particular.   Recent publications include "Sea Lane Security and US Maritime Trade" in Sam J. Tangredi, ed., Globalization and Maritime Power, Washington DC: National Defense University Press (2002), and “The Challenge of Maritime Terrorism: Threat Identification, WMD, and Regime Response,” Journal of Strategic Studies (forthcoming, 2005).  She is currently exploring the links between marine environmental degradation, failed states, and maritime crime in Asia and Africa.

Julie Chisholm is Assistant Professor of Composition and Rhetoric at Cal Maritime, where she specializes in communication literacies.  In 2004, she came to Cal Maritime from the University of Houston, where she was Director of Computers and Writing at its Writing Center.  Prior to that, she earned a Ph.D. in literature and creative writing at UH, where she was the 2000 James A. Michener Fellow in poetry.  Her areas of specialization include technology and pedagogy, rhetoric and composition (including writing program administration), and maritime literature.  Her most recent publications are textbooks: Wired for College:  A Student Guide to Computer-Assisted Learning and WebCT (Prentice Hall, 2004) and Wired for College:  A Student Guide to the Computer Classroom (Prentice Hall, 2003); and a poetry chapbook, Snap-Shooting at Stars (Red Booth Press, 2002).  At Cal Maritime, Dr. Chisholm coordinates the Writing Across the Curriculum program and is the GMS department's webmaster.  She is also a faculty advisor to the Cal Maritime Asian/Pacific-Islander Club.

Linda Guo earned her Bachelor's degree in French language & Literature in 1982 at Beijing Second Foreign Language Institute, and her Master's degree at Arizona State University in 1992. A member of The Chinese Language Teachers Association of California, Mrs. Guo teaches different levels of Chinese courses at Diablo Valley College and at California Maritime Academy. Mrs. Guo enjoys writing and is also a columnist for the Chinese newspaper Ming Pao Daily News. She is a regular contributor to Chinese News Digest Online, a magazine for Chinese people living overseas.

Lui Hebron is currently Assistant Professor of Global and Maritime Studies.  Professor Hebron holds a Doctorate in Political Science from Florida State University, a Master’s in International Affairs from American University and a Bachelor’s in Political Science from the University of Florida.  Prior to coming to Cal Maritime, he was the Director of the International Affairs Program at Eastern Washington University and Associate Director of Gordon Institute for Public Policy at Florida International University.   His research focuses on the areas of political economy (Globalization), international relations (conflict and war), and Asian studies (Pacific Rim and China).  Dr. Hebron’s book,  Globalization: Debunking the Myths, co-authored with John Stack, is under contract with Prentice-Hall and is set for 2007 release date.  His book, The Ethnic Entanglement, co-edited with John Stack, was published by Praeger Publishers, 1999.  Professor Hebron’s current book project, Globalization and China: Political Economy’s Odd-Couple is under contract with Congressional Quarterly Press and is scheduled for a 2008 release date.  Dr. Hebron has also published several chapters in edited volumes as well as numerous journal articles.

Timothy Lynch earned his doctoral degree in American History at the Graduate School and University Center of the City University of New York in 2004.  A member of the North American Society of Oceanic Historians and the National Maritime Historical Society, Dr. Lynch teaches courses in American and World Maritime History and is the founder and editor of H-Maritime, a listserv dedicated to maritime affairs.   A participant in Mystic Seaport’s Frank C. Munson Institute of American Maritime Studies, Dr. Lynch’s interests include maritime history in general and West Coast maritime history in particular. To that end, he has developed close working relationships with numerous local and regional maritime history museums and programs.  His areas of specialization include nineteenth century American maritime history, particularly the rise of the Pacific Coast and the role of San Francisco and California in American and global maritime history. His work has appeared in such journals as The International Journal of Maritime History, the Northern Mariner, and The Nautical Research Journal, and he is currently researching and writing a monograph, Beyond the Golden Gate: A Maritime History of California.  Tim resides in Benicia with is wife and two daughters.

Kathryn D. Marocchino earned a doctorate in modern foreign languages and literature from the University of Turin (Italy), where she held a lectureship for several years before coming to the United States.  She has also taught at the University of California at Davis and at Stanford University, and has been a professional translator and language consultant for over thirty years.  The author of several books and numerous articles in both English and Italian, Dr. Marocchino is also a trained hospice volunteer and pioneered her campus’s first service-learning course in death and dying (Dying: The Final Stage of Living) through a unique partnership with Kaiser Vallejo’s Hospice Department in 1999.  In 2001, she received her certificate of completion for the Professional Program in the Study of Loss and Grief through UC Berkeley Extension and currently provides on-going bereavement support on her campus for faculty, staff, and students. She is also certified as a Fellow in Thanatology (FT) through the Association for Death Education and Counseling (ADEC) and holds a certificate in Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) from the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation.  She is also the founder and president of The Nikki Hospice Foundation for Pets (The NHFP), the nation’s first and only nonprofit organization devoted to the provision of home hospice care for terminally ill companion animals.  In 2003, Dr. Marocchino was recognized by the Governor’s Office of Service and Volunteerism and in 2005, was awarded the President’s Lifetime Volunteer Service Award.

Louis M. McDermott, Sr. is a lecturer in Global and Maritime Studies. His doctoral dissertation at the University of San Francisco on the development of the deck curriculum at the California Maritime Academy is the only book-length treatment of maritime academy education.  Dr McDermott has taught at the United States Air Force Academy, and is currently a lecturer in American History at Solano College, as well as at Cal Maritime. During his tenure at Cal Maritime, he has introduced five new courses into the curriculum. Dr. McDermott has served on eleven cruises as the Commandant of Midshipmen and on three cruises as faculty.

Bunny Paine-Clemes taught literature, composition, and creative writing at Houston Community College, where she was named Most Distinguished Employee in a system of twenty-eight campuses and founded a literary magazine twice named best in the state.  Since beginning work at Cal Maritime in 1993, she has served as Director of Academic Assessment, Director of Faculty Development, and Faculty Senate Chair. She has also represented Cal Maritime on the Vallejo Commission on Culture and the Arts and served as Secretary and President of the Vallejo Community Arts Foundation and founder of the Vallejo Writers' group.  She was named Distinguished Woman of the Year by the Soroptomist Club of Vallejo, took a first in writing at the Vallejo Community Arts Foundation annual awards, and was one of the first recipients of the Fish Award for promoting outstanding teaching on campus.  Her publications include articles, essays, short stories, and poems in international, national, regional, and local markets.  She has also spoken widely before audiences of creative writers, metaphysicians, and teachers.
