IT News Updates

  • New Help Desk Portal (11/15/09)

There are now two ways to submit a request to the Help Desk's new portal.

  • Send an email to helpdesk@csum.edu. Your request will automatically be entered into the Help Desk tracking system and you will receive confirmation via email. Students must currenlty use this method instead of logging into the Help Desk portal (below) because of domain issues.
  • Logon to the Help Desk portal at http://cma-spiceworks/portal (you must be on campus). Faculty and staff can use a Web browser to log incidents and check the status of their requests via the Web.  When using a computer on campus, simply click on the link below to request assistance or track progress on your request(s). A conformation message (see example) containing an incident tracking number will be automatically generated and sent to you confirming receipt of your request.  Please refer to the incident tracking number when corresponding with the Help Desk.

Regardless of which of these two methods you use, a ticket is automatically created in the Help Desk tracking system. Cal Maritime began using Spiceworks as its Help Desk portal on 11/5/09. Spiceworks is an open source product that is used by more than 750,000 IT professionals worldwide.

  • myCampus Portal

Did you know that Cal Maritime has a new web-based portal and that some of your fellow students are already using it?  Our portal, known as myCampus, has been in development for over a year.  Designed with students in mind, this state-of-the-art portal provides built-in social networking tools to facilitate communication and collaboration among your classmates.  Here are some commonly asked questions regarding the portal.

How do I logon to the portal?  To logon to the portal, go to https://mycampus.csum.edu and logon with your Cal Maritime network credentials (i.e., use the same username and password that you use to logon to your Cal Maritime email or a computer here on campus).  If you have trouble logging on to the portal, please contact the helpdesk at helpdesk@csum.edu or call 707-654-1048.   ...more...

  • Red Condor Lands at Cal Maritime (8/11/09)

On Tuesday, August 11, the campus began testing a new institutional spam filter from Red Condor. This trial period is timed to allow us to make a decision regarding Red Condor prior to the expiration of the maintenance contract on our old institutional spam filter. We encourage your feedback regarding the new appliance via helpdesk@csum.edu by calling 707-654-1048.

Red Condor’s appliance promises to be more accurate and it will significantly reduce annual maintenance costs associated with spam filtering. In addition, it provides an online failover service in the event that the appliance fails.

  • Information Security Awareness Training (4/13/09)
  • Starting April 13, 2009, Work Place Answers (CSU's training vendor) will send email messages to designated Cal Maritime employees with a web link for accessing the course.  The course should be completed within 30 days of receiving notification.  Reminders will be sent to these individuals until it is completed.  Once employees have complete the online training, they should print out the certification and submit it to the HR Department.

  • PeopleSoft Finance 9.0 Upgrade Was a Success! (2/23/09)
  • On February 23, 2009, California Maritime began using an upgraded version (9.0) of the Finance module of our Enterprise Resource Planning database, PeopleSoft/Oracle.  This upgrade was mandated by the Chancellor's Office and will allow us to continue to obtain software support from the vendor along with the latest updates, fixes and release.

Cal Maritime has also decided to use the upgrade as an opportunity to introduce some new functionality for business and academic departments. For the first time, departments will be able to create their own purchase requisitions and send them electronically for approval.  They will also be able to view their purchase orders and so better track their budgets.  In this economy, that ability should prove invaluable.

Students and faculty are not directly affected by the upgrade, except that our staff will have more time for customer service.  Congratulations to the entire Finance staff for their dedication and hard work, which extended far outside their normal work hours.

The Information Technology Department is a department in the Division of Administration and Finance.
