2007-08 Major IT Accomplishments
- Implemented a new stable ship-to-shore communications system consisting of
- C-Band Broadband Satellite System (8 phone lines accessible from state rooms, email with attachments)
- An upgrade of the ships network (Chancellors Office $121,000)
- Synchronization of email and network communications through satellite link with downlink to Santa Paula, CA.
- An improved “Follow the Voyage” website using WordPress blogging software
- A draft of the IT Strategic Plan draft was produced by the IT Planning and Advisory Committee.
- VoIP pilot project implementation completed for new Simulation Center Building providing new functionality and backup system for the PBX in the future.
- Developed procedures and guidelines for IT staff serving onboard the TSGB saving money previously allocated to overtime.
- Cal Maritime accepted a 1.3M grant from CampusEAI to implement a campus portal
- Peoplesoft Human Capital Management (HCM) 8.9 upgrade successfully completed on target.
- Implemented Automate!Test to support regression testing for Peoplesoft upgrades resulting in savings of time and efforts in testing baseline releases, updates and fixes, upgrades, etc.
- WebEx acquired to support training initiatives and a Masters Degree program. It offsets time and money for meetings and improves collaboration.
- New tape backup system acquired and implemented for Data Center diminished need for Iron Mountain service annually saving $20,000 per year.
- Large 20KW UPS procured and installed in Data Center servers to provide network continuance during power outages and protection of Cal Maritime’s investment in equipment.
- Completion of fire suppression system in Data Center, server containment area constructed
- Upgraded core switches in the Data Center (CSU ITRP-2) resulting in a more secure and robust network infrastructure.
- Emergency Website Implemented (hosted by CSU)
- Reclassified the Network Analyst position as part of IT restructuring
- Implemented onsite support for Apple products on campus.
