Kingsbury SCHOLARS

Ada Catino
2007-08 B.C. Kingsbury Scholarship Recipient

Ada Catino of Petaluma, CA will tell you that the Cal Maritime summer cruise changed her life.  Ada is now in her third year at Cal Maritime as a Marine Engineering Technology (MET) major.  She entered as a Marine Transportation (Deck) major last year, but this summer, discovered the joys of working in ship engine rooms, so she changed her major.

In fact, while most cadets go on one two-month cruise aboard the Academy’s 500-foot Training Ship Golden Bear during the summer, Ada was out for a full four months.

“I love being at sea…the whole experience of being on ships,” she says.  “Every morning during cruise, I’d walk on deck and look at the ocean and feel really happy with the work.  Life aboard a ship is its own self-contained world.  By the time cruise was over, I was beginning to get a better sense of the overall workings of the ship and its systems.  I was just wishing I could stay longer because there is so much to learn.”

Ada says she will be looking for a shipboard engineering position next summer for her commercial placement and will be aboard the Golden Bear again between her junior and senior year in 2009.

“I’m the first person in my family to attend college,” she explains.  “I am so appreciative of the scholarship assistance I am getting from the Kingsbury endowment.  It is great to know that I am not going through this alone and that alumni and friends of the Academy understand the challenges and expense of higher education and have reached out to help.  I’ve got three more years of school before I begin working, so this support is really important and lets me concentrate on my studies.”

Rosalynn Kim
2006-07 B.C. Kingsbury Scholarship Recipient

Rosalynn Kim (Business-08), from Benicia, CA, was the 2006-07 recipient of the B.C. Kingsbury Endowed Scholarship.

Rose’s father founded William Kim’s Tae Kwon Do in Vallejo, now managed by his son, and at one time taught martial arts skills on the Cal Maritime campus.  Rose first learned about Cal Maritime through her father and says that her parents had a very strong influence on her choice to attend the Academy.  Her high school guidance counselor also recommended Cal Maritime as a school with strong academic standards.

Rose said she deeply appreciated the thoughtfulness of Dr. Kingsbury and his friends for their creation of the endowed scholarship. “Scholarships help cadets concentrate on academics and not bills, and that’s a very big plus.”
