       At sea

NOON POSITION

Underway Training off the southwestern tip of Cabo.

WEATHER FORECAST

Good news for aspiring celestial cadets and sun bathers!  We can expect fair-weather for the next few days as we transit south towards Zihuantanejo.  The seas and winds will remain calm helping push us closer to liberty time.  Temperatures will continue to climb into the 70’s as the cloud cover should be minimal.  This weekend we should expect an increase of tropical clouds approaching from the south bringing the possibility of widely scattered thunder storms as we move into a more tropical climate.  Keep those sextants out of the box.  Buenos Noches.  Eric Stenderup and Mat Lawlor

Tool Bags – A limited supply of student tool bags are now available.  Please see Mr. Green (Logistics Officer).

Computer Usage Policy (from the Captain):

·  Education:  It has come to my attention that inappropriate material – possibly inadvertently, (some songs but mostly videos) are being publicly shared through I-Tunes on the TSGB’s intranet system.  This is in violation of the CSU Computer Usage Policy and the CSU Sexual Harassment Policy.  Normally a pattern of offensive conduct is generally required as an element for sexual harassment, however, if the conduct is severe (e.g., unwanted sexual touching), a single incident can be sufficient to determine that a hostile work environment exists.

·  Recommendation:  My strong suggestion is to either password protect your shared I-tunes profile; remove the option to share your I-tunes profile with others altogether; or remove the inappropriate material from your library so that it can not be shared by those logged into I-Tunes.  If you have any specific questions as to what is appropriate, I highly recommend you ask one of the Cruise Discrimination and Harassment Advisors onboard.

·  Correction:  A reasonable time (2 days) will be given for each crew member to address the above issue.  Violations of the computer usage policy after that time will be handled officially.

If you are having a problem, please add it to the list outside the ship’s office.

From Sick Bay

The cramped conditions on-board ship makes the transmission of viruses, which cause colds, sore throats, and mild GI illnesses, more likely.  Careful attention to personal hygiene, especially frequent hand washing, has been shown to reduce the spread of these illnesses.  If you do develop a cold or other minor illness, typical “Over-the-Counter” medicines (OTC’s) are available outside of Sick Bay to help relieve associated symptoms.  Posted near the bins containing these medicines is an explanation of the nature of, and correct use of, these OTC’s. Please look it over to insure that you are using these medicines correctly. Also, there is a latched white cabinet above the bins with many items needed for basic wound care, such as Band-Aids and antibacterial ointment, stored inside.  All will be regularly stocked, but take only as much as you need for a day or two.  And, as always, if you have any questions or suggestions, please don’t hesitate to stop by @ 0815 or 1315 in Sick Bay while we are underway.

Commandant’s Corner

Student Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI) Seminar:  The student LPI has two assessments (one for self and one for observers) that measure each of the following five leadership practices:  Challenging the Process; Inspiring a Shared Vision; Enabling Others to Act; Modeling the Way; and Encouraging the Heart.

·            During several learning centered seminars, students will compare the two sets of responses to discover their strengths or areas of improvement as leaders.  The seminars conclude with the students creating an action or implementation plan to improve at least one leadership practice or behavior identified as an area they need to improve.

·            The LPI is open to all CMA students on a first come first serve basis.  Any remaining openings shall be offered to visiting students.  Class size will be limited to two 24 person groups.  The LPI consists of preliminary work (completed outside of the classroom) and three one-hour seminars.  There will be a total of six seminars scheduled (two for each class) throughout cruise which will give each student the opportunity to select a class based on their daywork schedule, watch, and other class schedules.  The LPI seminars will be given in the evening from 1900-2000 and will commence after we leave Zihuantanejo, MX.  Interested students should sign up outside the Asst Comdt’s office no later than 1600 Friday, 5 May 06.  Please don’t sign up if you can not commit to completing the entire LPI seminar.

Corps Corner

Ø     Make sure to keep up the grooming standards.  For men, the emphasis is on hair length, shaving every morning, and sideburn length.  For women, emphasis is on your hair being in a pony tail or off the collar and only one earring per ear.

Ø     There will be a grooming inspection at quarters on Saturday, 6 May 06.

Ø     Make sure that you remove your laundry as soon as it has been washed/ dried.  This will ensure that others waiting to use the laundry facilities can use them.  Also, do not leave your laundry in the laundry room, this is a fire hazard and your laundry will be lucky bagged (kept for a couple of days and if nobody claims, will be given to the engineers for rags).

Ø     Room re-inspections will occur at 1900.  You do not need to keep your door open for re-inspection.

Ø     Underway training will be held on 5 May 06 from 0800-1200 for all senior MT students. There will be no fishing during those times.
