Weather Info
DATE: May 25, 2006
As we head further south to Chile
expect weather conditions to remain about the same. Expect
winds from the Southeast at 10-12 kts, with SW seas 6-9
feet, and visibility 4-5 miles. The visible satellite image
continues to show significant cloud cover in our area, which
continues down to Valparaiso. A low pressure and associated
cold front has been observed in the Valparaiso area, and may
bring some light showers over the next 36 hours.
Mets. Feinman, Chong

The mirror like state of the sea, as observed from the ship,
is a good visual indicator for determining wind speed (or
force). The Beaufort Scale is used to judge wind speed
solely by observing the state of the sea. The handbook
that is used to assist the weather observer contains 13
pictures of the sea state ranging from Beaufort "0" (0
kts.) all the way to "13" (64 kts. and above). Referring to
the handbook, a fairly accurate measure of the winds true
speed can be obtained. Above, Force 1 (about 3 kts).
