Vessel Operations

DATE: June 08, 2006

In the day of satellite navigation, electronic charts and gyro compasses we still find ourselves tied to the past. Above, the day navigator and 2nd mate( along wit the meteorologists) pose for the camera while "flipping" the heeling magnet in the ship's binnacle (steering magnet housing). This must be done when the vessel crosses the magnetic equator. Neglecting this task can result in wild oscillations of the ship's steering magnet.
