Cocos Island
Cadet boat launch schedules are posted.
Faculty and staff may take any addition seats in the
scheduled boats. In addition, the #10, #11, #12 boats will
be shuttling faculty and staff. Cocos Island is a preserve,
and as such the rules are simple:
·
Take no food or beverages (other than
water) to the island.
·
Disturb nothing in the water or on the
island.
·
Bring nothing back with you other than
what you took ashore, (and make sure its everything!)
·
Remember, you will be exiting the boat,
directly into the water (waste to chest high) and wading
ashore. You must wear shoes or substantial sandals
in the water due to the presence of sea urchins and lots of
rocks.
·
Stay on the trails.
·
Sunscreen and insect repellant are
strongly recommended.
·
The island has an 8 ft tidal range. Areas of
the beach that are exposed at low water will likely not be
exposed at high water. Do not get stranded. Do not transit
away from the main beach landing area by means of the
shoreline.
·
For the good of the plumbing and drains on the
ship, leave as much of the sand of Cocos on the island.
From the Captain’s Desk
The Director of Marine Conservation Area of Cocos Island
on behalf of the Costa Rican Government has agreed to
waive the admission and anchorage fees for the Island of
Cocos. We are officially the guests of the Costa Rican
government during our visit, and therefore it is
extremely important that we abide by the guidelines they
have set forth:
]Removal or
disturbance of any marine or terrestrial flora and fauna
(plants & animals) is strictly forbidden.
]The leaving
behind of any trash, waste, solid or liquid contaminants
are not allowed.
]Stay on the
trails. Do not disturb rocks, vegetation or any natural
formations.
]No fishing
of any kind is allowed within the boundaries of the
marine sanctuary, including on the ship and ashore.
]Violation
of any of these regulations, may subject the individual
and ship to arrest by the Costa Rican government.
With your cooperation we can have another successful
visit to Cocos Island for the TSGB.

Water Conservation: Since we will have a five
to six day period surrounding Cocos Island and Costa Rica
where we will not be able to make water, we must do our best
to conserve water right now and ensure we are topped off.
Take sea showers, do full loads of laundry; ensure smart box
hoses are disconnected from the deep sinks; and fill out
AVOs for any leaky fixtures.
·
As we approach warmer weather, please ensure
you dog external watertight doors down all the way and keep
your windows closed.
·
Sinbad Games – scheduled for Sunday, 18 June.
See your div com to sign up. Each day, an event will be
highlighted in the Bear’s Tale: Today – Oscar Hunt -
How to play: Each team must locate and bring to
safety the trapped ‘Oscar.’ Each cadet will be required to
wear a blacked out SCBA mask, so as to simulate a smoke
filled room. Cadets must treat the rescue as if there were a
real fire and must only crawl around on their hands and
knees. The ‘rescue’ usually takes place down in the
marlinspike or engineering lab room.
·
Laundry: Laundries are secured. Depending on
water usage tomorrow and while anchored at Cocos Island, the
laundries may open during the transits to/from Costa Rica
from Cocos Island. However, that said, the laundries have
the potential to be closed until next Saturday.
·
Cocos Island Info: The boat assignments and
boat schedules are now posted. More information on our
Cocos Island visit will be given to you at your divisional
meetings.
·
There will be Divisional meetings in Ericson
classroom tomorrow, 10 Jun starting at 1830. Div 4 = 1830;
Div 5 = 1915; and Div 6 = 2000.
