From the Captain’s Desk

We would like to acknowledge those entities that made docking and undocking in the Port of Golfito so successful.  As always, many different members of the crew made a rather A-typical docking and undocking go smoothly.  This technique (not using tugboats), called the “poor man’s tugboat”, is used more often in countries outside the United States.

A special thanks to the Engineers, the forward and after line crews, and the amidships groups.  You all did a great job!!!

Captain Weinstock 84-2D

Does anyone have photos of the Training Ship GOLDEN BEAR at anchor in Cocos Island?  And, if so, I would like copies.  I am especially interested in photos from the top of the small mountain looking down into the cove with the TSGB at anchor in the  harbor.  Please email your photo’s to Peg Solveson in the Ship’s Office.   Capt. Weinstock

3/C Eng – review of exam 4 at 1830 in Ericcson

Father’s Day picture. .  1230 on helo deck. Sunday

Dads on the ship. . . get your picture taken and say hello to the kids back at home – meet at 1830, quarter deck.  Sunday evening!

Medusa Row/Run  5K row, 5K run  will be done tomorrow (Sunday) starting at 0800.  [earlier depending on number of folks interested]  Sign up outside the ship’s office this evening by 2100.  Start times will be posted by 2115.

Costa Rica – if you have good photo’s for the web site, email them to Emily Cross by 1900 this evening.  Please identify where the picture was taken, and who is in it.

Dr. Rucas' Antrhopology 360 class will be reenacting a 'Mesoamerican Ballgame' on Monday the 19th at 1400 hours on the 03 Aft Deck.  The reenactment will entail music, festive food, costumes & the Ballgame.  The game will be delivered with the student's accumulative knowledge of the pre-Hispanic culture of South & Central America.  There will be limited seating due to the small vicinity, so come early.

Division Five Meeting Tonight, 1930, Ericcson Class room.  Please be present for a brief meeting to go over Sinbad games and our divisional murals.  All Cal Poly students participating with DIV5's should be present.  If you need to make stars, see the DivCom before the meeting to get the info you need.  GVN!

Deck Canvas Projects Due Dates:

Div 6 – 18th June 06

Div 4 – 22nd Jun 06

Div 5 – 25th Jun 06

There will be a canvas projects “contest” for all those who care to enter, the evening of the 25th at 1830.  So if want to see how the faculty/staff judge your project against your classmates, throw it into mix.  Neatness, cleaness of line, originality. . . . all those things count.   Bosn’ Allen

Congratulations to Cadet Chris Hartley!  The first 1/C Engineer to complete all STCW sign-offs!

Celestial Program - Congrats to Cadets Grout and Campbell for passing the celestial program. Excellent! 2/M

Attention All Hands - As of 1000 today, the GPS navigation systems on the bridge have been rendered inaccessible to the bridge watch. From here on the senior cadets on watch will be navigating the traditional way, using dead reckoning and celestial fixes. Sailing vessels sometimes went for days without a positional fix.  This is a practice our ship has undertaken almost every year, and every time, the navigational skills of our senior deck cadets have landed us safely in sight of land at the appropriate time and date. I am confident this year will be just as rewarding. 2/M

Celestial Program - Cadets who have stars but have not reduced them should do so tonight. If your shots don't work out you need to know so you can make efforts to shoot another set. Also, you are free to "bank" your shots with me in case a better night develops. We are now arriving at Catalina on June 25, so there are only 8 available sea days left and the weather above Cabo San Lucas looks pretty socked in. In other words, "Git 'er done!" 2/M

Cal Poly/Business Students – Tank Dive on Monday the 19th, muster on the Green Deck, 1 level, forward, immediately after quarters.  Wear your work clothes.  Bring your hardhat, flashlight, and camera.  Gloves are an option.

Jam session, Saturday! Bring your guitars, instruments, and your imagination.  If you don’t have an instrument, you can make one!

Sinbad Games will take place tomorrow. Leisure wear is approved for Sunday beginning at 1000 for those personnel not on watch or duty.  During lunch, the approved work or watch attire is required.   **All leisure wear must be in good taste.
