Captain's Log

Captain’s Log
July 1, 2006

The Golden Bear departed the dock in Vallejo on schedule (0900) on an overcast morning with 5 plus knots of ebb current setting it, along with 232 cadets and 40 staff into the Carquinez straits. After turning 180 degrees into the channel, the courses were set for departure at San Francisco Sea Buoy. By 1130, the pilot boat was alongside and the pilot departed and cadet Gorey set the course for Zihuatanejo Mexico at a speed of 10 knots.

After 3 days of mass confusion, moving on board, drills, loading stores and getting settled, shipboard routine set in quickly. The lines were stowed and the ship secured for sea. Classes started and cadets went on watch. By 1700 the ship was passing Monterey California in light following seas. You could hardly tell that we had left the dock. Sextants will be issued tonight and the ship will become a navigation wonderland by star time tomorrow morning.

For the information of all, the schedule in Zihuatanejo has been changed to accommodate a medical relief delivery in Paita Peru. The Ship will be in Zihuatanejo Mexico, arriving on July 9 and departing the morning of July 12.
