Captain's Log

July 4, 2006

Happy Birthday America, from this little part of America on the high seas. The cadets spent the day on watch, doing day work and going to class in addition to preparing for a BBQ and pyrotechnic display along with patriotic music, to be carried out this evening to celebrate the 4th of July. While removed from our homes, it make us appreciate even more those special things we have in America and those special functions we share with our family every year. Tonight our family will be our shipmates on the USTS Golden Bear.

The ship continues south south west in good weather. Yesterday was so clear, the navigation class almost overwhelmed the second mate with navigation work. There is no question that the Golden Bear is the most navigated ship on the ocean.

This morning we passed a large pod of whales and work stopped for a short while, so that everyone could have a good look at who and what we share the ocean with. A loud roar from the bos’n brought most back to the tasks at hand. Shorts and t-shirts are becoming the normal uniform and jackets are being put away for Latitudes further south.

Pictures from tonight gala will be transmitted as an early addition Follow the Voyage tomorrow morning.
