Captain's Log
July 26, 2006
After many days of gray skies, we awoke
this morning to a clear sky with a beautiful sunrise. It
just seemed to start the day off right. More students and
staff just seem to come out onto the deck when the sun is
out. The weather is cool, but nice.
Mid-morning, a cadet noticed that we
were trailing a blue line about 10 feet under the water and
close to the propeller. We slowed the ship a got a grapnel
hook on the line and pulled what we could of it onto the
deck. It was a long line fishing line. Fishing vessels
float small buoys with hundreds of feet of line on them with
a small weight on the bottom. Every 20 feet or so, they put
a hook. This one had broken loose and we had caught it or
it us during the night. We got about 200 feet on deck and
found that it was caught on the hull about amidships.
However, we had a man overboard drill scheduled for the
afternoon, so while the boat was in the water, we had it
take a tug on the fishing line and pull forward. It came
loose and we collected about another 200 feet of line and
hooks in the boat and that was all of it.
The swell has increased from the south
a little, but the weather is still excellent for the
southern winter.
As an information item, the port call
into Golfito, Costa Rica has been moved forward one day.
The ship will be in port on the 13, 14 and 15 of Aug. and
sail on the 16th.
