Captain's Log

04/29/07

Finally after many months of preparation, the Training Ship GOLDEN BEAR sailed from its home port.  Cruise 2007 has started!  We have left behind our loved ones for another adventure.  Many students, faculty, staff, and licensed ship’s officers have worked hard over the past semester preparing the GOLDEN BEAR.  But it has been worth it.  We will have an experience of a lifetime.

In the past few weeks our Cadets have loaded a seemingly endless number of ship’s stores.

Here an under-class cadet gives signals to the crane operator while under the close supervision of his upper-class.  Faculty member (and one of the Ship’s Bosuns) Peter McGroarty (wearing the white hard hat) supervises both of the Cadets.

Interesting cargo…stay tuned for more on this.   A special thanks to everyone involved in the loading of this rather unusual item!

Cruise is a very special event.  Thank you to the San Francisco Fire Boat for making the approach to the Golden Gate Bridge even more memorable.

For many, cruise will be remembered as one of their most remarkable experiences.  Here San Francisco Pilot K. Carlson teaches the Corps Second Mate Tony Locken about piloting (guiding) a ship through the San Francisco Bay.  Very special thanks to the San Francisco Bar Pilots for sharing their expertise with our students.

In the next few weeks we will all settle into our routines.  The days will all blend together.  And Mother Nature will show us her beauty, everyday….

To my Wife Karin, I say, “Happy Anniversary!   I love you and our children more than anything!!  Thank you Karin for your support!!!”
