Captain's Log

05/03/2007

1900 (7pm) Local Time ZD +8

Lat:                              39º-25´ N

Long:                            150º11´W

Cse/Spd:                      278T/15.0 knots

Wind:                           Southwest @ 20 knots

Sea and Swell:  WSW 6-10 feet

The weather is starting to improve.   The seas and swell are starting to decrease as is the wind.  Earlier this morning we had occasional patchy fog and as such observed all the necessary precautions.

When in reduced visibility the vessel is ready to maneuver immediately.  Watch-standers are even more attentive during these times.  Listening and looking both in the radar and out the window are very important.

The Cadet wearing the black hat is one of two lookouts posted (the other is on the other bridge wing) to watch and listen.  They have no other duties but to lookout.

Cadets Benjamin and Brierley (both seniors) analyze the weather.

Cadets at the California Maritime Academy CSU are encouraged to take on as much as responsibility as they can handle.  Here Cadet Michelle Brierley discusses the weather with Harvey Portz the Licensed Watch Officer during the 1200-1600 (4pm) watch, while underclass George Garten (in the blue coat) steers the ship under the watchful eye of Cadet Benjamin.
