Captain's Log
06/08/2007
We have good news from our representative
in Vietnam: Cadet Ben Daviscourt’s remains are on their way
to the care of his family at his home in Washington State
and will arrive Sat. evening. A memorial service will be
held on Monday. While it does seem like a long time to get
the body home, the timing is favorable considering how much
red tape had to be navigated in Vietnam.
Messages continue to be sent from the
crew, cadets and friends of Ben to the family.
The transit to Guam has been
remarkably smooth with excellent weather for navigation, so
the senior deck cadets are starting to finish the celestial
navigation part of the program. Celestial navigation, while
no longer often used in practice due to GPS satellite
navigation, it is still a required subject for licensing.
Who knows when they might turn off the Satellites?
Today the first fish of the transit
was caught about 1600. It was a very nice mahi mahi which I
am sure will find its way to the BBQ tonight.
Study and work or the ship are the
order of business on board as final exams and the end of
cruise will come very quickly after Guam.
Tomorrow, a little instruction on how
celestial navigation works.
