The Captain David Lyman Scholarship for Hawaii Residents
The Captain David Lyman Scholarship seeks to honor the memory of Captain David Lyman as a longtime member of Hawaii's maritime community by providing financial incentive for Hawaii students to apply to and enroll at The California Maritime Academy and pursue a profession in the maritime field.
As many as two recipients will be selected per year. Each student receives a scholarship of up to $3,000 per year to be renewed for up to a total of four years if the student maintains a minimum GPA while at Cal Maritime as follows:
- Freshman students must maintain a minimum 2.25 GPA
- Sophomore, Junior, and Senior students must maintain a minimum 2.50 GPA
To be eligible for scholarship consideration, students must meet all of the following criteria:
- Be a resident of the state of Hawaii
- Submit an online admission application to Cal Maritime by November 30th of the year preceding the year you enter.
- Be a student pursuing their first bachelors degree
- Apply for the scholarship by writing a 500 word essay by January 15, 2012 describing 1) how the student's interest in the maritime profession has developed AND 2) the student's goals for professional life after graduation from The California Maritime Academy. All students who meet the above criteria will be considered for the
Scholarship. Scholarship finalists will be selected by a committee
made up of a members of the Hawaii maritime community, the Lyman family, and California Maritime Academy representatives. Scholarship finalists will best exemplify the legacy of Capt. Dave Lyman through the applicants' history and potential as presented in the application materials. These finalists will be invited for a personal interview in Hawaii.
The scholarship winner must have received an offer of admission will be selected from the finalists and determined by The California Maritime Academy's Director of Admission, Director of Financial Aid, and Vice President for Academic Affairs. The California Maritime Academy's Admission Office will be the point of contact for all scholarship applicants. The selection process will also be coordinated through that same office.
Scholarship winners will be notified by March 15. In the event of the scholarship winner choosing to not attend The California Maritime Academy, a new winner will be selected from the remaining finalists and notified as soon as possible.
