VPN FAQs

Q: Can I establish a secure connection to the campus network while off campus?  /  Can I remotely control my desktop computer in my office?

A: Some of Cal Maritime's network services, such as email and Moodle, can be accessed using a web browser.  Others, such as network shares (Z: drive), require a Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection The VPN creates a secure connection or tunnel between your computer and the campus network.

Faculty and staff can use Cal Maritime's VPN device to connect to the campus network from a computer off campus.  This is done by using a Web browser (Internet Explorer preferred) to connect to the VPN and login using your campus credentials.  The campus VPN allows you to establish a secure connection to the campus network from off campus.  Essentially, your off-campus computer will have access to all campus network resources that it would if it were connected on campus.  The VPN also allows you to establish remote terminal sessions to control your office computer.

For more information and instructions, please see the VPN section under IT Services.

Q: I get booted out of my VPN session after an hour or more.  Is there a time limit for being connected?

A:  Yes.  After a preset time limit, you will need to log back into the VPN.  Processes that were open at the time of disconnection will still be running, however.
