(VALLEJO, Calif. – May 20, 2014) – A change has been made in the Training Ship Golden Bear’s itinerary for the first Training Cruise. Due to current events in the South China Sea, we were unable to obtain appropriate port clearance for the scheduled stop in Ha Long, Vietnam on Thursday, May 22. Instead, the ship will proceed to its next scheduled port, Saipan, Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands.
The second Training Cruise may also be adjusted, since it was scheduled to visit Ha Long in July. However, if the situation changes, it is still possible that the second cruise will make its scheduled stop in Vietnam. An announcement regarding the itinerary for the second Cruise will be made as soon as that information is available.
The Training Ship Golden Bear's annual training voyage is part of the specialized curriculum offered at Cal Maritime. For the duration of each summer training cruise, Cal Maritime cadets are responsible for running the ship, including navigating and driving, repairing and overseeing the engines, and maintaining the vessel. All training cruises are supervised by Cal Maritime faculty, the ship’s captain and chief engineer, and a team of experienced mariners.
During the cruise, cadets continue to attend classes, and intellectual learning, applied technology, and leadership development blend daily as cadets apply what they have learned in the classroom, in the lab, in the Corps of Cadets, and on the waterfront.
