(VALLEJO, Calif. – April 7, 2014) – Cal Maritime cadets are organizing an effort to deliver needed supplies to an orphanage in South Korea. The supplies will be loaded onto the Training Ship Golden Bear and delivered during the 2014 Training Cruise.

The Herrak-won Orphanage is home to 80 children, some of whom are physically or mentally disabled. The residents vary in age from infants to young adults. In the past, cadets aboard the Golden Bear have undertaken similar humanitarian projects in other countries during the training cruise.

“The cadets at Cal Maritime take pride in being able to give back to communities all over the world,” said Cadet Megan Richardson.

Richardson and Cadet Scott Doyle have established a gift registry at Toys R Us. Anyone interested in donating may find the registry by going to toysrus.com, selecting “baby registry” and using these search terms:

First Name: Training Ship
Last Name: Golden Bear
City: Vallejo
Reference #: 52910700

Donors may choose to select in-store pickup at the Toys R Us in Vallejo, 105 Plaza Dr. to avoid delivery expenses. Donations should be placed under Megan Richardson’s name. The last day donations can be accepted before the Training Ship Golden Bear’s departure is April 23, 2014.

The Training Ship Golden Bear's annual training voyage is part of the specialized curriculum offered at Cal Maritime. For the duration of each summer training cruise, Cal Maritime cadets are responsible for running the ship, including navigating and driving, repairing and overseeing the engines, and maintaining the vessel. All training cruises are supervised by Cal Maritime faculty, the ship’s captain and chief engineer, and a team of experienced mariners.

During the cruise, cadets continue to attend classes, and intellectual learning, applied technology, and leadership development blend daily as cadets apply what they have learned in the classroom, in the lab, in the Corps of Cadets, and on the waterfront.
