For Jeff Harcq, the decision to come to Cal Maritime was "obvious."

"I had worked on boats my entire life," he explained. "I had a 50-ton license. I was doing small charters. I went back to school and found that I did really well. What did I want to do? I put the whole thing together and it was obvious."

Harcq had friend who had come to Cal Maritime who gave him a tour of the school, and the rest fell into place.

"I definitely want to sail after I graduate," said Harcq. "I'm looking at starting on tankers and eventually moving on to tugs."

At Cal Maritime, Harcq has found the training and experience that he was seeking.

"I like the hands-on opportunities. I like getting out on Cruise and sailing. And I like applying everything that we learn throughout the year."

A Tug Valour Memorial Fund Scholarship was a big piece of the puzzle for Harcq.

"I owe the supporters of this scholarship a huge thank you," said Harcq. It's not taken for granted. Getting a scholarship was huge for me."

In awarding the Tug Valour Memorial Fund Scholarship, recognition is given to students who plan to pursue careers in tug and barge work in honor of the sailors who were lost at sea when the tugboat Valour sank off the coast of North Carolina in 2006.
