Alcohol and Drug Prevention Center

The Alcohol and Drug Prevention Center will provide the resources to reduce the number of alcohol and drug related incidents on and off campus. The Center will require physical space as well as programming expenses. Ideally the space will entail an area with one large meeting room to hold 30 people, two small group meeting rooms to accommodate five to eight people, three offices (two for student peer leaders), a workroom, and a lounge with shelving and desks for resources, computers with internet, comfortable seating for individual studying and end tables for brochures and displays. In addition to the facilities and furnishings, funds are needed to implement and run an effective program as follows:

$ 1,000 Alcohol and Other Drug Usage Surveys
$ 3,500 Social Norming and Marketing Materials

Cost: Total $49,000



Cal Maritime is accepting gift support to provide bathrooms, bleachers, changing rooms, and a concession stand and ticket booth for the newly renovated Bodnar Field. The field is critical both to the health and wellbeing of our cadets as well as to our leadership program. Additional opportunities for funding exist in all areas of the athletics program.

Assessment Center

Accountability in higher education is mandated by accrediting agencies, the state and the general public. Quite simply, citizens want to know whether a university is offering a quality education and delivering on their promises. Assessment is the key in answering these questions. The Assessment Center will provide a more robust system for identifying, obtaining, analyzing, and using key achievement data. More specifically, it will enhance the ability to accurately record, manage and report data to be used for the assessment of student success and educational effectiveness, which in turn will guide improvement from the institution to the classroom level. The Center will help immensely with achieving this goal. Resources will be used to: fund stipends for faculty to continue to improve their classroom assessment strategies; buy software and training that will help systematize data and store and retrieve it – perhaps in the form of student e-portfolios; hire or assign personnel for the purpose of institutional research functions.

Cost: $50,000


Community Engagement Center

The Center for Community Engagement is located in the Center for Engagement, Teaching, and Learning in the Laboratory Building. The Center for Community Engagement offers many opportunities to get involved in volunteer work and community service. Community service gives students a chance to give back to the community, a sense of accomplishment, and improves the Vallejo area. The Leading Lights Mentoring Program allows cadets to be mentored by alumni and in turn cadets will have opportunity to mentor local underserved high school students. Funding will allow the Center to provide transportation to participants, software to evaluate group sessions, administrative assistance and end-of-year activities.

Cost: $5,000


Distinguished Professors

"The Distinguished Professor Program" will annually provide $10,000 for five years to a distinguished professor to be used to cover costs associated with professional development, travel, equipment, computers, etc. The goal is to have a minimum of one distinguished professor per academic department per year for a minimum of five years. The following academic departments need professorships: Marine Transportation; Engineering Technology; Mechanical Engineering; International Business and Logistics; Global Studies and Maritime Affairs; Culture and Communication; and Science and Mathematics.

Cost: $50,000 per Distinguished Professor



An endowment is a fund, maintained in perpetuity, in which the principal remains intact. Income from the initial gift is used to support the endowment's mission. An endowment can be created to support a scholarship, campus project or any program.

Cost: $25,000 minimum to establish a program support endowment; $50,000 minimum for a scholarship endowment.


Equipment and Computer Support

Information Technology equipment is intensive and, as technology changes, it becomes imperative to integrate the newest technologies being used by industry into the curricula. Cal Maritime is seeking support to upgrade its simulators and laboratories with new modern technology. [For example, more than 200 computers and servers are required to run the simulators in the Simulation Center. All of these computers will need to be replaced with the next few years at an expected cost of approximately $600,000!]

The following four levels of support are sought:

  • Platinum - $100,000
  • Gold - $50,000
  • Silver - $25,000
  • Bronze - $10,000


Faculty Development Center: Senior Faculty Associates Program

Currently the Center for Engagement, Teaching and Learning (CETL) operates as the Faculty Development Center providing a variety of services to support new and continuing faculty. These services include but are not limited to: new faculty orientation, teaching and learning conferences and workshops led by industry leaders, opportunities to showcase teaching expertise among campus faculty, training workshops and support for educational technology, support for classroom assessment, and social and professional support through faculty learning communities. A limitation of CETL services is the sheer number of functions other than faculty development provided by the center. The wide variety of demands on the CETL severely limits the individualized support available to faculty.

The Senior Faculty Associate(s) Program will greatly enhance the support available to all faculty members, but particularly new faculty who may need individualized assistance in acclimating to teaching and university service demands. A faculty member selected to be a Senior Faculty Associate would receive release time - ideally 1/2 time release - in return for faculty development planning and working in the Faculty Development Center. The Associate will advise and assist faculty in course or program creation, course or program improvement, major workshop planning, research and publication, as well as other faculty endeavors such as Faculty Learning Communities, grants and administration of programs from the Chancellor's Office Institute of Teaching and Learning.

The Senior Faculty Associate position would be available to one or more tenured faculty based on available funding. The period of service may be determined by the initial selection committee. An application process should be created by the initial selection committee.

Faculty Sabbatical Leave Support

Per the faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement, Cal Maritime must award no fewer sabbatical leaves than 12% of the total number of faculty who are eligible, which amounts to approximately four sabbatical leaves per year. Faculty members on sabbatical leave are paid full salary for a one-semester leave or one-half salary for a full-year leave. When faculty members take a sabbatical leave, they must be replaced with part-time faculty. Sabbatical leaves are important for faculty members to maintain current in their chosen profession. The cost is $20,000 per year per sabbatical leave to hire replacement faculty to continue supporting the sabbatical leave program.

Faculty Travel and Professional Development

Cal Maritime's programs are very technically oriented and, with technology constantly changing, it is increasingly more difficult, but imperative, for faculty to maintain professional currency. The cost is $2,500 per year per faculty member to send faculty members to seminars, conferences, and workshops for maintaining currency and advancing professionally.

Cost: $2,500 per year per faculty member


Leadership Library and Training Center

The Leadership Library and Training Center will provide students, staff, and faculty a wide variety of resources on current research, trainings, and best practices related to leadership studies and practice. The Center will be a hub for lectures, trainings, webinars, simulations, exercises, and discussions on leadership from teaching faculty, professional staff, business leaders, community professionals and other local and national leaders. In addition, the space will serve as a center for leadership mentoring on all levels from peer-to-peer mentoring to mentoring by alumni. This dynamic center will facilitate the interaction and collaboration of all faculty, staff, students, and community around leadership issues.

This Center will have an area with one large meeting room (to hold 30 people), one simulation room, two small group meeting rooms (5-8 people), two offices, a workroom, and a lounge with shelving and desks for resources, computers with internet, comfortable seating for individual studying and end tables for brochures and displays. The Center will include print and electronic media resources, as well as leadership exercise, games and activities. The simulation room will provide hands on experience through leadership simulation programs.

In addition to the facilities and furnishings outlined above, the below funds are needed to implement and run an effective program:

  • $10,000 Laptop computer, printer, two desk top computers

As another node in the "Cal Maritime Learning Community," this center will exist through the collaborative efforts of the Leadership Development Office, Library, Career Center, and the Center for Community Engagement, and the faculty.


Merit-Based Scholarships

In an effort to attract high quality students and to increase overall student quality, Cal Maritime seeks to establish ten full-tuition merit-based scholarships.

Cost: $5,000 per scholarship or $50,000 per year for 10 scholarships


Naming Opportunities

Naming opportunities exist for all buildings and major portions of buildings; university or college streets or roads; stadium and baseball fields and other areas of major assembly or activity; plazas, malls, and other large areas of campus circulation; and all other highly visible facilities and properties. Valuation of all available spaces will be based on the CSU/Cal Maritime naming policy and applicable formulas.

Performing Arts

The University recognizes the need for its students to be able to express themselves and continue to enjoy the talents they bring to our campus. The fund will allow the campus to continue offering courses and opportunities for Jazz Band, Chorus and Ballroom Dance classes. Funding would assist in covering the expenses of an instructor, music, costumes and instruments. With success in this area other fine and performing arts such as art, photography, and drama will be added.

Cost: $10,000 per semester


Research and Scholarly Activity Fund

Faculty members are required to perform research and scholarly activity in addition to teaching and service as part of their normal job responsibilities. Due to high teaching loads, faculty do not have the time to conduct research or scholarly activity which creates problems when it comes time for them be evaluated for tenure and/or promotion. A Research and Scholarly Activity Fund will provide release time for faculty to conduct research and scholarly activities. Typically, it costs approximately $6,000 to provide one faculty member with three hours of course release time.

Cost: $6,500 per Faculty


Shared Literary Experience Fund

The Shared Literary Experience aims to welcome new students into the academic environment by inspiring intellectual learning, discussion, and curiosity centered on a common summer book reading. The program also serves to initiate relationships between students and the campus community. This fund will support the purchase of texts for incoming students and discussion group leaders, and will fund speaker fees for the book's authors. Additional funds may be used for related activity ideas, such as a reflection response essay contest, service learning opportunities, or movie screenings.


  • Books ($25 x 300) = $7,500 per year
  • Speaker fees = $25,000 per year
  • Activities fund = $2,000 per year


Student Research and Teaching Assistants

Faculty members are required to perform research and scholarly activity in addition to teaching and service as part of their job responsibilities. Universities typically provide student teaching assistants or research assistants to assist faculty in their research and scholarly activity endeavors. The Fund would provide resources that faculty can use to hire student teaching or research assistants. This will benefit not only faculty members, but to the students employed as well. This is another avenue for students to gain "hands-on, real-world experiences."

Cost: $6,000 per student assistant


Student Scholarships

As costs of public education continue to rise, more than three-fourths of our cadets must rely on financial aid. Scholarships allow us to welcome highly motivated students to our campus, and can often mean the difference between a young person attending the Academy or not going to college at all. The Financial support our cadets receive from scholarships can help make their education more affordable, allowing them to put their focus where it should be – on their education, not their finances. Scholarships are vital to making a Cal Maritime education accessible to more qualified students and to providing ongoing support to returning students.

Cost: $250 or more


Student Travel

Students who participate with faculty on their research and scholarly activities typically become co-authors on publications and are invited to present the results of their work at professional conferences. The Student Travel Fund will allow students to attend professional conferences.

Cost: $2,500 per Student


Writing Center

Universities have "Writing Centers" where students can get help with improving their writing skills. These Centers are usually staffed by trained undergraduate tutors who can provide individual conferences with students. A Cal Maritime Writing Center will require a physical space and funding for student tutors as well as a stipend and/or release time for a Writing Center Director or Coordinator. In addition to assisting students with improving their writing skills, the Center will also work on improving critical thinking and information fluency and thus form a partnership with the Library Department as a node in the "living-learning community." Furthermore, a Writing Center will provide the foundation for the future "Technical Writing Program."

Cost: $100,000 per Year
