Academic Preparation

Are you ready for college-level English and math?

First-year students admitted to the California State University (CSU) may demonstrate academic preparation for GE English and math coursework through multiple measures, which determine course placements and identify students requiring additional support. Multiple measures include standardized test scores, high school cumulative and/or math GPA, and completion of approved college preparatory coursework.

Multiple Measures

Discover your GE English and math course placements using the following menus. Select the options you completed or will complete in high school prior to graduation. Cal Maritime awards course placements based on students' highest achievements (only one option required per subject). Engineering majors must select from available options specific to their concentration.

Supportive Instruction

Students requiring additional development will automatically enroll in supportive instruction as part of their first-year GE English and math coursework. For English, enroll in the year-long EGL 101 and 102 "stretch" course (fall and spring semesters). For math, enroll concurrently in MTH 100 and its lab, MTH 099. Additionally, admitted California students who did not fulfill any of the multiple measures must participate in CSU Early Start.
