Commercial Cruise

Cadet Shipping Handbook

The Commercial Cruise program is a keystone event during your training here at Cal Maritime. It is your chance to get real world experience aboard a commercially operated vessel. Sea Training or Cadet Shipping occurs during your sophomore summer.

  • Deck Cadets (Marine Transportation majors) are required to sail a minimum of 100 days aboard a 100 gross ton vessel.
  • Engine Cadets ( USCG License Track Mechnical majors and Marine Engineering Technology majors) are required to obtain a minimum of 60 days of sea time aboard a vessel with a minimum of 4000 hp.

The training and experience that you will receive during your sea time on a commercial vessel varies greatly with the type of trade in which the vessel is engaged, as well as the ship's schedule and crew.
