EPT & ELM

Admitted first-time freshmen students must participate in the English Placement Test (EPT) and/or Entry-Level Mathematics (ELM) Exam to determine their eligibility to enroll into first-year English and math courses at Cal Maritime. To pass, students must achieve qualifying scores of 147 on the EPT and/or 50 on the ELM. Students who do not pass one or both tests must complete remediation by the start of their second academic year or risk academic disqualification. Students may also earn exemptions from participating in the EPT and/or ELM (see Exemptions from EPT & ELM).

Visit the Educational Testing Service (ETS) website for additional information. (Note: As of July 2017, registration for EPT and ELM will remained closed for the foreseeable future.)

Exemptions from EPT & ELM

Students may earn exemptions from the EPT and/or ELM and eligibility to enroll into first-year English and math at the CSU through qualifying scores on applicable tests and passing approved, year-long college preparatory courses in high school. Completing any of the following conditions exempts students from EPT and/or ELM and remediation per subject area. (Note: School districts must formally adopt the ERWC curriculum and upload the course as specified to the UC A-G Course Management Portal each academic year for students to receive exemption. The EAP does not accept substitutions, equivalencies, or partial-year courses for granting exemptions.)
