Tutoring Services

The mission of SEAS tutoring services is to empower cadets to become self-motivated and active learners while fostering confidence and independence in a collaborative learning environment. Our goal is to help students gain subject competence to promote academic success and support persistence by providing tutoring services that are:

  • Learner-centered, increasing cadet engagement in the learning process and greater understanding of tutored courses
  • Integrity-based, ensuring delivery of services that uphold high academic standards
  • Service-oriented, serving diverse cadet populations and reducing barriers for cadet success by responding to their unique learning needs
  • Supportive, providing a safe, comfortable, and welcoming environment for cadets and continued learning and tutoring skill development opportunities for the tutors

SEAS provides academic support to Cal Maritime students by making English, foreign language, and STEM tutoring available five nights per week in multiple Tutoring Labs.  Trained tutors will be present in each Tutoring Lab for FREE drop-in tutoring services.  Tutoring by appointment is also available for students who may require more individualized support.

Program outcomes are:

  • Maintain a team of proficient tutors covering course content for all majors
  • Active usage of tutorial services

  • Tutors' assessment of tutees' engagement in the learning process and subject competence

  • Cadet satisfaction

  • Enhanced leadership skills of the tutors
