Welcome from the Dean of Students

The Office of Dean of Students assists with academic, personal, and professional development while at Cal Maritime. The offices, programs, initiatives, and events that collaborate with the Office of the Dean of Students provide a comprehensive support network that helps cadets navigate challenges, find opportunities to get involved, build a sense of belonging, understand community standards, and engage in dialogue across lines of difference.

You are a Keelhauler

Membership in the Keelhauler community both provides rights and assigns responsibilities. The Office of Community Standards helps you understand these rights and responsibilities and serves as a resource to understand the behavioral decisions, shared expectations, and restorative practices that repair harm to individuals and our community. Additionally, there are campus traditions in which you can join, such as our annual Keelhauler Week, that celebrate the unique nature of the academy experience.

Be a Part of Campus and Community Life

Whether engaged in activities on campus or in the local Vallejo community, cadets who get involved are more successful in the classroom, graduate sooner, and enjoy their Cal Maritime experience more. You can find opportunities to participate in cadet governance, clubs, organizations, and activities and excursions through the Associated Student of California Maritime Academy (ASCMA); civic activities through the Office of Community Engagement; and social, educational, and cultural programming in the residence halls through the Office of Residence Life.

Access Support Systems

You are joining a small, caring community in which members look out for one another and make responsible choices. If you see a Keelhauler in need, offer a helping hand or a kind word, or share your concern with a member of the faculty or staff. Cadets in distress have the support of a cross-campus network of staff and faculty who meet regularly to promote student success and campus safety. By identifying individuals who demonstrate early warning signs of possible concerning, distressing, or disruptive behavior, the Care Team can engage, support, and minimize concerns by intervening at the earliest possible point. Additionally, the Dean of Students serves an advocate to help cadets access support resources both inside and outside the Division of Student Affairs. This includes directing cadets to programs and services that address both physical and mental health, financial challenges, housing or food insecurity, academic success, appeals to university processes, and unique needs for which there is not a readily identified support resource.

Be Curious and Grow

Take advantage of your time here at Cal Maritime to engage with your peers, faculty, alumni, and campus administrators. Ask the difficult questions, learn new perspectives, question your prior assumptions and beliefs, explore the many facets of your intersectional identities, navigate how to function in ambiguity, and take action on your values. Invest time and energy in the First Year Experience program to understand better common challenges experience by many first year cadets and learn how to avoid missteps.

Understand You Belong

Get involved and participate in activities that make Cal Maritime welcoming for all cadets. Challenge yourself not only to learn about others, but also to teach others about you. Bring all of who you are - a product of your lived experience, family, peer relationships, faith community, cultural heritage, and much more - to campus. By your acceptance to Cal Maritime, you have already proven yourself to be worthy of membership in the Corps of Cadets and the Keelhauler community.

Welcome to California State University Maritime Academy, your Keelhauler community, a place to learn, grow, and thrive!
